A $1000 cash boost will help hundreds of vulnerable young people pursue their educational goals, with the NSW Liberal National Government today announcing the successful recipients of the 2018 FACS Scholarship Program.
The Scholarship program, which allows students to receive financial assistance from Year 10 up until they complete their tertiary education, provides $1,000 that can be spent on items to support a student’s education including text books, computers and private tutoring.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast Scot MacDonald MLC and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch MP have welcomed the announcement and said that 20 students from across the Central Coast would benefit greatly from the funding.
“This money will help students in our area in many practical ways; it may be as simple as paying for the internet or buying new textbooks but it all counts in enabling a vulnerable young person reach their potential,” Mr MacDonald said.
“We want the best for young people and we know a good education is one of the keys to a successful start in life.”
Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said the FACS Scholarships would provide assistance to young people studying at TAFE or high school.
“I’m really pleased that these scholarships are targeted to students living in social housing, supported accommodation or out-of-home care,” Mr Crouch said.
“Having spoken to previous recipients from my electorate of Terrigal, I know first-hand of the enormous benefit that these scholarships provide to help students further their education and development.”
The Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward congratulated the 400 new and continuing recipients and thanked all those who had applied.
“With 250 scholarships awarded in 2017, I am delighted that this year we have been able to help even more students across the state with financial assistance,” Ms Goward said.
To be eligible to apply for the grants, students must be either living in social housing (public, community or Aboriginal housing); on the NSW Housing Register; receiving private rental assistance; living in crisis or supported accommodation or living in out of home care.
