Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast Scot MacDonald MLC is encouraging the Central Coast community to get involved with NAIDOC week.
Running from the 8th to the 15th July NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples this year with the theme of ‘Because of Her, We Can!’.
The 2018 theme of ‘Because of Her, We Can!’ focuses on the roles that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played and continue to play at the local, state and federal level.
“The Central Coast has a strong indigenous history and NAIDOC week celebrates that heritage”, Mr MacDonald said.
“This week is an opportunity for all Central Coast residents to learn a little more about Aboriginal history and celebrate the contributions made to Australia.”
“I would like to acknowledge the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council who are vocal and effective advocates for their community.”
Mirring Aboriginal Corporation in Gosford received $2,000 and Kanwal Public School Parents and Citizens Association in Wyong received $1,000 from the NAIDOC Week Grants program to run local events during NAIDOC week.
The grants of up to $3,000 were available to grass roots organisations to run local events
Mr MacDonald today joined Mayor Jane Smith, Central Coast Council and community for a flag raising and official ceremony at the Wyong Chambers followed by dance performances at The Art House.
The 2018 NAIDOC Awards Ceremony will be held on Gadigal land on Friday 13th July at the International Convention Centre, Darling Harbour.
